We had a great group out Labor Day for airsoft at Elkhart Tactical in Indiana not far from South Bend. We had a variety of people from a couple of younger guys to some more intent older guys with saws.

We all had a great time and hope to see more people out this fall and winter. The facility is huge, around 100,000 sq ft and can fit a bunch of people for a big game.

We are opening a new indoor airsoft cqb house and arena located in Elkhart Indiana called Elkhart Tactical. This will serve people in Elkhart, South Bend, Granger, Goshen and La Porte IN as well as Niles and Edwardsburg Michigan. The building clocks in around 100,000 sq ft and can easily accommodate 100-200 people. We have had a few airsoft games and people seemed to really like the fact of playing cqb style airsoft games. We are looking for people that would like to run some bigger games throughout the year.

Airsoft Troubleshooting Guide

In this article we are going to cover troubleshooting your AEG.

Sometimes a gun will stop working. Often it is a very easy fix that you can do yourself rather than spend $50 for repairs.

Troubleshooting Tip #1

If your gun is completely dead, try charging your battery.

For most of the guns you buy, the chargers that come with the gun are useless. Buy a decent smart charger. This keeps your battery charged and will not wreck the battery. For the cheap chargers, if you over-charge the battery, it can wreck it. Buy a charger that can charge both Nicd and Nimh batteries.

Tip #2

Check your Fuse. This is usually located where your battery is located. You can double check your fuse by taking your fuse out and then attaching the two ends of the fuse together to see if you get power to the gun. If you get power, the problem was the fuse. Replace and you are good to go. Any standard 20 or 30 amp fuse from any hardware store is fine. Buy some extras. If you fire your gun when the battery is low, this can cause your fuse to blow. If you notice that your rate of fire is slowing down, charge up the battery.

Tip #3

If you have a funny noise coming from the gun but no bbs are coming out, check your barrel to see if there is a bb blocking the barrel. Do not keep shooting your gun if nothing is coming out. You can strip your gears. You will just make it worse. Take the barrel rod that comes with most guns and insert it in the end of the barrel. Make sure you take out your magazine. You can shine a light into the mag area and look down the barrel to see if there is a blockage. Make sure your gun is on safe when you do this. Do not pull the trigger while looking in the barrel. If you find that you are getting a lot of stoppages from bbs stuck in the barrel, you are probably using cheap bbs. Cheap bbs are the quickest way to wreck your gun. Buy decent bbs, not that crap from Malmart or other big box stores. Cheap bbs have air bubbles inside them and seams that cause the bb to jam and crack open. Once they are stuck, they can strip your gears if you keep shooting. Most of the cheap bbs come in .12 gram weight. Buy at least .20 gram. If you are paying less than $12 for 2000-3000 bbs, you are probably buying cheap bbs. Decent bbs run about $12 - $25 for 3000 bbs.

Tip #4

If your gun makes a funny noise, it could be the motor screw just needs adjusting.

The screw to set the height on the motor is usually located in the bottom of the handle of the gun. Make turns on the screw until the bbs seem to come out at the right speed and the motor sounds better.

Tip #5

Do not attempt to take your gun apart unless you are mechanically inclined.

Working on airsoft guns is not impossible, but it might be a good idea to buy a used and broken gun and take that apart to learn, rather than a good gun. If you take your gear box apart, it can be very hard to get it back together. Most repair places will charge a minimum of $30 just to look at a gun. Then, it is usually about $30 per hour plus parts for fixes.

Tip #6

Parts are not easy to come by, but some models are more popular and they do have more parts available. Consider this when buying a gun.

Tip #7

If you buy a cheap AEG, there will probably be absolutely no parts available. Anything under $100 is a cheap plastic gears AEG. If you buy in the $150 range, some of these guns can be upgraded and fixed. Look for guns that are TM compatible, which means there will be Tokyo Marui parts that will fit in the gun. This makes it easier to fix. Echo 1 and Jing Gong are some examples of guns that can often take TM parts. That way, if you strip out your gears, you can buy another gearbox and even upgrade your gun if you want. Sometimes it pays to spend a little more on that first gun.

Tip #8

If you are unsure or have questions to ask, one of the best places to find answers are your local airsoft field, a local or national airsoft forum or even Yahoo Answers is a good place. Most people at the local field know of someone that fixes guns for a very low fee. I had an M4 that needed work, and someone on a team fixed it for me for $18. Just ask for a gun tech but make sure you get proper info on them like address, etc and PUT IT IN WRITING. Put down money amounts, time frames for the fix, and any guarantees. Have both tech and customer sign paper. Forums are great too. Most people will help you if you ask nicely. Also, you can post a question on Yahoo Answers and people will answer your question as best they can.

Marketing your online blog or website concerning airsoft can be a daunting task. We will discuss a couple of the ways that you can use to drive traffic to your airsoft site.

One of the great ways to get your name out there is use google adwords and pay for airsoft visitors. The only good thing about this program is that most of the people who click on your link actually are interested in what you have to offer. The key to making this work, is to keep your budget limited to what you want to spend, and perhaps offering something really cool that will make people want to bookmark your site. The key to this is to offer great airsoft content. Some people have figured out how to use google adsense to help pay for their website. If you have good airsoft content, and have adsense running, people might click through and you get paid when people click on other's adword advertising.

Another great thing you can do and it is usually free is to find airsoft sites that are like yours but maybe not in direct competition and see if they will add your airsoft link to their site. Most sites will do this, if you offer a reciprocal link, or link back to their site in return. You can do a search through google for the term "airsoft submit your link" or "airsoft add my link"

This should slowly start to build links coming to your site which will help with your google and search engine rankings.

Another thing you can do is add your link manually to directories, and you can also pay a company to add however many links to your site you would like. This does help, but having RELEVANT links helps more than just a generic directory link.

Difference between buying a low cost airsoft m4 rifle and a decent airsoft gun

Is there a difference between buying a $40 m4 rifle and a $150 m4 rifle? Why should I buy a more expensive model gun? What sorts of issues will I have with the cheaper model m4 rifle or other cheaper model gun?

So, you are thinking of buying an airsoft rifle for yourself or someone you know. However, you know next to nothing about these guns and cannot seem to see the difference between the cheaper gun and the more expensive ones.

The biggest difference you will see is quality!

A $40 AEG or Auto Electric Gun is the $40 gun will be almost all plastic and is really just a cheap toy kind of like you would buy at the dollar store only this costs $40.
The internals, or motor of the gun will have plastic gears, which will inevitably strip over time. How long is anyone's guess. Could be in a week, or a few months. As long as you understand that this gun just will not last and probably break after a few uses but might be what you are willing to spend for a first gun, then this is the gun for you.

The barrel and stock of the gun often break from being dropped or just man-handled. This is due to being cheap plastic and poorly made.

The fps or the ability of the motor to shoot the bb out at a certain speed also will vary with a cheaper model gun. Most guns in the $40 range will have less than 200 fps (usually 120-220 fps) which is not really strong enough to play in a real skirmish. You will be outgunned and the people with the $150 guns will be able to shoot you at 150 feet, while you can only shoot about 50 feet with any effectiveness.

The battery that is shipped with these guns are really next to useless. Throw them out and buy a decent battery. The chargers are the same, next to useless. Buy a decent rc type battery charger or smart charger and get a good ($20-$30 range) battery. Most skirmishers buy more than one battery so that their gun will last in an all day skirmish.

Parts. There really are no parts for these cheap guns, it is better to just buy a new one.

Now we will talk about the entry level guns. Those $40 guns are not really even entry level as they will not allow you to play with any decent chance of success.

The entry level guns in airsoft generally start around the $150 - $200 range. These guns are often made in China and have strong ABS plastic or metal. A good gun in this range is Jing Gong. For a chinese airsoft gun, they make a decent entry level choice. They often have metal parts and actually come with stock high fps.

Chinese made mid-range products often have slight wobbles in the barrel and stock and where they lack is the robustness of the motor and gears. This causes the gears to wear out over time, although they usually last a good 2-3 years with proper care. Often they have metal parts and metal gears, which last much longer than your plastic gears. They can also take more of a beating if you acidentally drop them although stocks often break if the gun is dropped. The stock fps of these chinese airsoft guns are usually about 300 - 380 fps. This is good for playing at a real skirmish as the fps limits are generally under 400-450 fps.

There are a few entry level airsoft m4 rifles and other guns from some manufacturers from Taiwan, which are generally better made than those from China., although Chinese made guns have come a very long way in the last few years for durability and quality. Because the Chinese guns are close to the more expensive guns, you can usually modify or upgrade them with more robust internals if you desire. For example, if you had a decent chinese gun, and used it for 3 years or so, then your motor went, you could keep the body of the gun, and get new internals to upgrade your gun, thereby getting more use out of it over time.
Because of the many different types of airsoft m4 rifles and other airsoft guns, most people just buy another new gun and keep collecting more and more.

The top level guns, such as a TM, are made in Japan or Taiwan and suprisingly have a lower stock fps than the chinese guns. However, their motors and gears are top notch and can last many years and are easily upgradeable. You are looking at spending $400-$900 for this type of gun.

A great analogy for buying an airsoft m4 rifle or other airsoft gun is much like car buying. You do get what you pay for, and you need to decide if you would rather buy a used $500 car vs a decent $5000 car or buying a new 2010 model car. I would highly suggest not buying the $40 AEG airsoft gun, and sticking with the $150 gun for an entry gun, if you are pretty sure airsoft is a hobby you would like to get into.

Do airsoft M4 rifles legally have to have an orange tip?

American federal laws state that it is required by law to have 6 mm (approx. 1/4") orange tips to be present on all "toy guns" which includes airsoft type toy and replica guns transported within and imported into the United States.

However, these orange tips can easily be removed or painted. Please help the airsoft game in general and do not do this. One high level case occurred in Florida where a student threatened fellow classmates with an airsoft pistol and was later shot dead when he pointed it towards an officer. The orange tip mandated by US Federal law had been painted black. Airsoft players may decide to paint over the orange tip on their guns because it makes them more discrete at a distance when they play, and we all like to be as realistic as possible. However, despite the lack of federal penalties for consumers who remove the required orange tips, some states like California have enacted state legislation that does impose criminal penalties for the removal of any required orange blaze markings.

How to effectively utilize an airsoft shotgun with devasting effect.

Airsoft shotguns, modeled after their real steel, or real firearm model, can provide some of the same uses and characteristics as the real gun.

Shotguns, in the real world, are generally used for close quarters combat (or cqb in military speak) and provide a great platform to put alot of metal down range and onto a target. With the use of buckshot, a shotgun can provide "spread" of the projectiles, increasing the likelihood of a hit on target.

Most airsoft shotguns in the past have resorted to firing only one 6mm bb to simulate the effect. Well, that effect just doesn't cut it anymore. Today, you can get great low cost shotguns under $100 that will fire 3 bbs in a spreading pattern which more closely resembles the real deal.

Some of the problems with airsoft shotguns in the past were often related to the action of the airsoft shotgun or the way the shotgun is "racked". Airsoft shotguns are generally racked or cocked just like the real steel but this action wreaked havoc on the sometimes plastic parts of the cheap shotguns. Most of the newer shotguns today have real action and have that satisfiying aggressive "rack" sound that a real shotgun makes. They have parts made of metal now that can withstand the racking abuse much like a real steel shotgun. When we say "real steel", we generally mean a real honest to goodness rifle or shotgun.

In the airsoft world, say in a cqb environment where you are often just on the other side of a wall with the enemy lurking around the corner, when that racking sound is heard, the enemy will know they are about to be on the receiving end of a barrage of 6mm bb's. Most people start heading the other way.

There are two kinds of airsoft shotguns that you can get;

1) Pistol grip airsoft shotgun

2) Full stock airsoft shotgun

Both are great for cqb. Mostly it is personal choice for which one to get. I prefer the full stock because I like to put the airsoft shotgun up into my shoulder. Some people prefer pistol grip and fire it from the hip. The pistol grip version can be a little easier to manouever around tight corners.

Let's discuss some of the proper uses of the shotguns.

1) Cornering

I would use generally accepted cqb techniques such as pieing off corners and the like. To see a great shotgun reloading video click on army shotgun reloading techniques.

This kind of reloading drills can also work with the airsoft shotguns that load with a shell. Most of the airsoft shells can be shot 10 times per shell with 3 bb's in each shot. Then you would have to reload your airsoft shotgun and practice your drill.

If the enemy was super smart. they might try to determine that you have shot all your ten shots, and then knowing you will have to reload, try to attack after your 10 shots. To help combat this, I would work in pairs of 2 or stacks of 3-4 and always have someone loaded or covering.

2) Airsoft Shotgun Carry

I would carry your shotgun in a cqb setting generally in a low ready position with the tip of the barrel just slightly down and looking over the sights at your targets, once you are in a building and getting ready to go into a room, I would have the shotgun up in a ready position ready to fire. If there are people in the stack ahead of you, I would keep the shotgun down, but your team might have their own SOP or Standard Operating Procedure.

3) Friendly Fire

In an airsoft cqb environment, you must look out for friendly fire. This is because there are multiple enemy and multiple threat areas. To help combat this, it is a good idea to have your airsoft team assign a challenging pass that only your team knows. Once this is used a few times, it will be compromised, but it works at the beginning of the game. Choose a 2 word pass such as "Burger King" When you see movement ahead and are not sure if they are enemy, yell out "Burger!" If they are on your team, they should yell out "King!" If they are on the other team, they wouldn't know why you are yelling Burger. If they do not give the proper pass, then light them up.

2 Main types of airsoft shotguns

1) Spring
2) Gas

Most of the cheaper airsoft shotguns will be spring. Most of the more expensive ones tend to be gas operated. The cheaper spring ones work great, while the more expensive ones tend to be a bit better made with more metal.

There are a few models out now under $100 that shoot well and shoot quite far, roughly 150 feet or so. Try to get extra shells or mags for your guns, so that you don't get caught without ammo.

Shotgun Extras

You can also grab accessories for your shotgun. Some of the better accessories are airsoft shotgun bandoleers for carrying extra shells, shell holder for buttstock, shell holder for receiver, and sling shell holder. You can also get shell pouches to hold extra ammo. Some models might have a tactical rail to attach flashlights. You do not need a scope on a shotgun.

Some Airsoft Shotgun Terms

Heat Shield: Added to a gun to look more like a military shotgun, looks cool

Slam Fired: A method of firing that allows you to shoot by pumping the shotgun rather than pulling the trigger. While cool, it does cause stress to shotgun, and might result in breakage and less life expectancy of the gun. Use sparingly.

Pistol Grip: Short grip like a pistol, used more for home defense.

Full Stock: Regular stock used more on military shotguns. Allows better recoil and sight picture by keeping shotgun in your shoulder and on target.

Airsoft Shotgun Shell: Shell used to keep bb's. usually holds about 30 and gets 10 shots to a shell.

Airsoft Shotgun Mag: Some shotguns use mags, and hold bb's.

To summarize all that we have discussed so far, airsoft shotguns deliver a great "bang for the buck" in any airsoft type skirmish.

How do you become an Airsoft Sniper for a cheap price?

There are a few ways to acquire your gear so that you look like a professional airsoft sniper.

The first purchase you will want to determine is your airsoft sniper rifle. There are a few decisions you will have to make.

The most important would be whether you run a spring sniper rifle or an aeg sniper rifle.

There are a few pros and cons for each type.

Springs generally have more consistent power and cost less to run. Most of the higher power sniper rifles are spring operated. Most are bolt action. You do not need to fear running out of battery power during an op. The cons to a spring airsoft sniper rifle is that you can only shoot as fast as you can pull the bolt. Only one shot per trigger pull. If you are in a fire fight with enemy with higher power high ROF (rate of fire) aeg's then you might be in for a duck and cover. The enemy has the power to pin you down with superior cover fire, allowing the enemy time to manouver their assault elements to put effective fire on your position.

Di Di Mau!!! Di Di Mau !!!!!!!

That means "get the #$%$% out of here and quickly.

As a sniper, you should always have your escape route planned out ahead of time, even utilizing techniques to slow down any opponents, such as thick bush, claymore mines, etc. The good snipers will di di mau and move into another position very quickly, then get into another pre-planned position that is well defended and then be very still and attack again once the assault gets close, then fall back and possibly move around to the enemies rear if possible. Sometimes this can be done with a team of 2 snipers, where one moves and the other "takes over his position", and the enemy assumes the new sniper is the same one. The first sniper can then hide, and then attack as the enemy is to his flank or preferably from their rear. This can cause major havoc and consternation to the enemy, as they start to get decimated from two different positions.

If you have a sniper rifle that is an aeg, you often give up a little range for a little more ROF. You also will lose a bit of distance. This is more of a personal choice. You might find that a good semi aeg works great as a sniper rifle. Some sniper teams have a dedicated sniper rifle, and the spotter has an aeg for back up and sniping. This can work very well as well.

We will now look at some of the popular models that you can choose from and see the differences in cash outlay. You can set up a half decent airsoft sniper kit for about $200. If you want to go high end, you could easily drop $2,000+.

To get a decent airsoft sniper rifle, you need to spend at least $100 for a good spring model.

For a low entry price, you can look at TSD Sports M100 Sniper Spring Airsoft Rifle.

The last couple of higher end guns cost more because they use more metal and are generally better built and should last longer. While they often have lower stock fps, they can be more easily upgraded and should last much longer and give better game play and probably more accurate. However, some of the middle range guns work great. Some of the lower end guns have a parts issue, in that if something breaks, you just have to buy another gun, while the high end guns will usually have parts available.

Remember too that snipers are a breed apart, and you need to have a certain mindset to be an airsoft sniper, and it is definately not for everyone. You have to love sitting still in the bush for hours and you might only get one kill, so if you like to shoot lots and get in the thick of the action, maybe look at a regular carbine AEG.
